International Women’s Day

International Women’s day and what it means to some of our Kippa-Ring residents. Maureen Mehlert. War years were very hard for the women, they had to have coupons to purchase food, and it was very stressful for them as many of the men didn’t come back home. Women had to be very strong and support each other in every way.

Women formed special bonds and even helped each other to take care of all the children. Women had to protest for women’s rights, they couldn’t go into a bar to have a drink, so the women marched and chained themselves to the bar at the Regatta Hotel.

Women are strong and have sense and did not have enough respect back in that time. Maureen would like to pass a message onto the younger women of this generation, stand tall and don’t let anyone get in the way of your dreams, battle on and you will succeed. It’s natural for women to be strong, it’s in our nature, we ran the country while the men were away at war.
